Whether you're working on a project or taking on a new career, sometimes starting is the hardest part. If you're interested in getting into video production, these five steps will help you get started.

1. Watch stuff and get inspired
Getting inspired is the first step to entering the world of production and entertainment. Do your research. You have to dive into content you like and then find out all the possible roles that are played to create that content—behind the camera, as well as in front. Consuming content you enjoy should give you the kick-start you need by giving you a glimpse of what is possible in this industry.

2. Get some gear
Choose your creative weapon of choice: Some people use a camera and some people use a computer loaded with expensive software. Learn your tool inside and out. Start with your interests, and then try different skills that require different tools. For instance, if you land on photography, learn how to set lights like a pro, or develop your videography skills. Once you get a taste of different disciplines, you will know what you like and what you don’t. You don’t have to spend a ton of money, just get something that can get the job done.

3. Get some training
Some sort of training is key. You don’t have to enroll in an expensive 4-year university or film school, though these two options will give you the foundation and confidence to pursue a career in media production and a better chance during the interviewing process. Another good way to learn is by shadowing someone who is already doing the work you would like to do. Any on-set experience you can gain will only help you progress.

4. Meet people
You've heard it before: It’s who you know, not what you know. The best way to get a leg up in the production industry is by meeting people who are doing the work you want to do. Networking is a great way to learn and to get some work. Be sure to upload your resume to LinkedIn, Indeed, Staff Me Up. Search for gigs on craigslist. Get all the experience you can. Most jobs are filled through recommendations, so mingle—and don’t burn bridges.

5. Put yourself out there
Once you start creating projects you are proud of (or not), show it to the world. Every project you put out is an opportunity to get better: When you put your work out there, you can receive feedback, which gives you an idea of where you can improve.

The main thing is to get out there and bring your ideas to life. These 5 steps will start you on your right path—and remember, everyone's path is different.
